Internship is a compulsory period of supervised clinical training that bridges the transition from medical student to independent medical practitioner. In Sri Lanka, internship training is conducted under the supervision of the Sri Lanka Medical Council to ensure that newly qualified doctors are competent, safe, and fit to practise.
This period represents a critical stage in professional development, where graduates apply their knowledge and skills in real clinical settings while working within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Structure of Internship
The internship programme consists of 12 months of supervised training divided into two clinical appointments of six months each, conducted under the guidance of consultant specialists in recognised hospitals.

Role of the Intern Medical Officer (IMO)
During internship, the graduate is designated as an Intern Medical Officer (IMO). The IMO:
- Acts as the first point of contact for patient care
- Participates in clinical decision-making under supervision
- Coordinates care within the healthcare team
- Maintains accurate clinical records
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, and colleagues
This role requires both clinical competence and strong professional and ethical conduct.
Training, Objectives & Professional Conduct
Internship takes place in a structured hospital setting with the aim of preparing graduates for safe, independent, and professional medical practice.
Objectives of Internship
The internship aims to develop:
- Clinical knowledge and practical skills
- Professional judgement and decision-making
- Ethical and legal awareness in medical practice
- Communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to manage patients safely and effectively
It also prepares graduates to work under pressure and adapt to real-world healthcare environments.
Training Environment
Internship training takes place in a structured hospital setting where:
- IMOs work within assigned clinical units
- Supervision is provided by Consultants and senior medical staff
- Support is available from multidisciplinary teams
- Exposure includes ward work, emergency care, procedures, and patient management
Professional Conduct
Intern Medical Officers are expected to:
- Maintain high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct
- Provide compassionate, patient-centred care
- Demonstrate punctuality, responsibility, and accountability
- Work effectively within healthcare teams
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
Failure to meet expected standards may result in extension or repetition of internship.
Assessment & Completion
Internship performance is assessed throughout the training period. Only upon successful completion is the graduate eligible for full registration with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
How Performance is Assessed
Internship performance is assessed through:
- Regular progress reports and appraisals
- Evaluation by supervising Consultants
- Review by the Head of the Institution
Successful Completion Requires
- Completion of the full training period
- Submission of satisfactory reports
- Compliance with SLMC requirements
Only upon successful completion is the graduate eligible for full registration as a medical practitioner.
