SLMC-approved training posts provide structured, supervised clinical experience for provisionally-registered practitioners completing their internship and for postgraduate doctors pursuing specialist training. Only posts formally recognised by SLMC count toward registration requirements.

Training Counts Toward Registration

Overview & Purpose

A training post is a clinical position in a hospital or healthcare institution that has been formally recognised by SLMC as suitable for supervised medical training. Training posts exist for two groups: provisionally-registered doctors completing the compulsory internship year, and postgraduate doctors undergoing specialist training in SLMC-recognised postgraduate programmes. No period of training completed in an unrecognised post will count toward any SLMC registration requirement.

Types of Training Posts

  • Internship training posts — in SLMC-approved hospitals for provisionally-registered doctors completing the one-year compulsory internship
  • Postgraduate training posts — in SLMC-recognised institutions for doctors enrolled in specialist training programmes (MD, MS, and equivalent)
  • Allied health training posts — approved clinical placements for Allied Health Professionals completing supervised practice requirements

Why Approval Matters

  • Only training completed in an SLMC-approved post is counted toward internship or specialist registration requirements
  • SLMC-approved posts guarantee a minimum standard of supervision, case volume, and clinical exposure
  • Approval is granted per specialty per institution — a hospital approved for medicine may not be approved for surgery
  • Approval may be reviewed, suspended, or withdrawn if SLMC standards are not maintained
  • Always verify with SLMC directly before commencing training in any post

Criteria for SLMC Approval

SLMC evaluates training posts against a set of minimum standards before granting or renewing approval. Hospitals and institutions seeking approval must demonstrate:

  • Sufficient patient volume and case mix relevant to the specialty
  • Availability of fully-registered supervising consultants with appropriate specialist qualifications
  • Adequate facilities, equipment, and clinical support services
  • A formal training schedule including ward rounds, clinics, procedures, and teaching sessions
  • A written supervisory agreement and structured assessment process
  • Compliance with SLMC inspection requirements and willingness to receive SLMC site visits

Hospital Accreditation

Apply for Training Post Recognition

Hospitals and healthcare institutions wishing to have a clinical unit recognised as an SLMC training post must submit a formal application. SLMC will conduct a site assessment before granting recognition. Contact SLMC for the current application form and requirements.

Application Process

Doctors seeking an internship or postgraduate training post in an SLMC-approved hospital must follow the correct application process. Training posts may not be self-arranged without formal SLMC or Ministry of Health allocation, depending on the type of post. Always confirm the allocation process applicable to your registration category before approaching hospitals directly.

Internship Post — Application Steps

1

Obtain Provisional Registration

Apply for and receive your SLMC provisional registration certificate after graduating. You may not begin applying for internship posts before this is issued.

2

Ministry of Health Allocation

Most internship posts in government hospitals are allocated through the Ministry of Health. Contact the Ministry's medical recruitment division for the current allocation process.

3

Confirm SLMC Approval of the Post

Before accepting any allocation, verify that the hospital and the specific unit hold current SLMC internship approval. Do not rely solely on the allocation letter.

4

Report to Hospital and Notify SLMC

Report to the allocated hospital on the start date. Submit written notification to SLMC of your internship commencement, including the hospital name, unit, supervisor name, and start date.

Postgraduate Training Post — Application Steps

1

Enrol in an SLMC-Recognised Postgraduate Programme

Postgraduate training posts are linked to enrolment in a recognised postgraduate programme (e.g., MD/MS at a Sri Lankan university or PGIM). You must first be accepted into the programme.

2

Programme Coordinator Allocates Training Post

The postgraduate programme coordinator or PGIM allocates you to an approved training post. Posts are not self-arranged.

3

Confirm Training Post with SLMC if Required

Some specialist training pathways require separate SLMC notification of training post allocation. Check with your programme coordinator.

4

Complete Structured Training & Assessments

Complete all rotations, logbook requirements, and in-training assessments as required by your postgraduate programme and SLMC.

Notify SLMC of Training Post Commencement

Submit your training post commencement notification and upload required documents via the SLMC e-Services portal.

Documents Required

For Internship Commencement

  • Valid SLMC provisional registration certificate
  • Ministry of Health allocation letter (for government hospitals)
  • NIC or valid passport
  • Confirmation of the hospital's current SLMC approval for the specific rotation
  • Name and SLMC registration number of supervising consultant

For Postgraduate Training Commencement

  • Full SLMC registration certificate (active)
  • Confirmation of enrolment in an SLMC-recognised postgraduate programme
  • Training post allocation letter from the programme coordinator or PGIM
  • Confirmation of supervising consultant's SLMC registration and specialist qualifications

Important Notice

  • Training completed in an unapproved or unrecognised post will NOT count toward any SLMC registration requirement
  • It is your responsibility to verify approval — do not rely solely on your employer or hospital
  • SLMC approval must be confirmed before commencing, not after
  • Any change of training post requires prior written notification to SLMC; unapproved transfers may invalidate that training period
  • Providing false information about training post allocation is a serious disciplinary offence

Supervisory Requirements

Supervision is the cornerstone of safe training. SLMC holds supervising consultants to a high standard and expects all supervisors to take their training responsibility seriously. Inadequate supervision is grounds for SLMC to withdraw approval of a training post. Trainees who feel they are not receiving adequate supervision should contact SLMC.

Supervisor Eligibility

  • Must hold full, active SLMC registration — not provisional or lapsed
  • Must hold relevant specialist qualifications recognised by SLMC for the specialty in which supervision is provided
  • For internship supervision — must be a fully registered consultant in the specialty of the relevant internship rotation
  • For postgraduate supervision — must hold postgraduate specialist qualifications and be approved by the relevant postgraduate programme authority
  • Must not be the subject of active disciplinary proceedings at SLMC

Supervisor Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day clinical supervision appropriate to the trainee's level of competence
  • Ensure the trainee is included in ward rounds, clinics, procedures, and teaching sessions
  • Complete SLMC performance assessment reports honestly and on time at the end of each rotation
  • Report any concerns about trainee conduct, performance, or health to SLMC without delay
  • Not leave trainees to work independently beyond their competence or registration status
  • Maintain personal familiarity with SLMC guidelines on internship and postgraduate training

Report a Supervision Concern

If you are not receiving adequate supervision in your training post, contact SLMC directly via the support portal or by phone.

Contact SLMC

What Good Supervision Looks Like

  • Regular (at least daily) contact with the supervising consultant during ward rounds or clinics
  • Clear guidance on the scope of procedures you may perform independently vs. under direct supervision
  • Timely feedback on your performance and areas for improvement
  • A named supervisor who is contactable during your working hours
  • A formal mid-rotation review at approximately 6 weeks to identify and address any concerns early
  • Access to educational resources and protected teaching time
  • A safe environment to raise concerns without fear of reprisal

Standards & Ethics

Professional Standards Apply from Day One

From the moment you receive provisional registration, you are bound by the SLMC Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. Conduct within training posts — including how you treat patients, colleagues, and supervisors — is subject to SLMC oversight throughout your training.
