Covered Activity Types
The SLMC registers and authorises the following short-term professional activities for overseas healthcare professionals visiting Sri Lanka.
CME Workshop Attendance
Overseas professionals attending accredited Continuing Medical Education workshops and symposia organised by Sri Lankan medical colleges or SLMC-recognised institutions.
- No clinical activity involved
- Certificate of participation issued
- Typically 1–5 days duration
- Invitation letter required from organiser
Short-term Clinical Training
Structured clinical attachments or observerships at Sri Lankan hospitals or medical institutions. Clinical involvement requires prior authorisation from the SLMC.
- Maximum 3 months per visit
- Host institution letter required
- Temporary Clinical Authorisation issued
- Supervised practice only
Continuing Education Programmes
Structured multi-day or multi-week continuing professional development programmes offered by Sri Lankan postgraduate institutes or medical faculties.
- Institutional enrolment required
- Programme must be SLMC-accredited
- Certificate of completion issued
- CPD credits may be recognised by home regulator
Visiting Specialist Consultations
Overseas specialists invited to provide specialist opinion or demonstrate specialist procedures under the supervision of a registered SLMC practitioner at a Sri Lankan facility.
- Prior SLMC approval mandatory
- Limited to specific invited cases
- No independent clinical activity
- Sponsoring SLMC practitioner required
Conference Participation
Overseas professionals attending or presenting at accredited medical or scientific conferences in Sri Lanka as a delegate or speaker do not require SLMC registration, only CME attendance confirmation.

Programme Accreditation Inquiry
Sri Lankan institutions hosting overseas professionals may apply for SLMC accreditation of their programme, enabling CPD credit recognition and participant certification.

Registration Process
Follow these steps to register for a workshop, training, or obtain temporary clinical authorisation before your visit.
Determine Your Activity Type
Identify whether you are attending a CME workshop (no registration needed beyond organiser), undertaking clinical training (requires Temporary Clinical Authorisation), or participating in a programme (requires enrolment).
Gather Required Documents
Collect: proof of registration/licence from your home regulatory body, passport copy, invitation/acceptance letter from the Sri Lankan host institution, and a summary of your intended activities (especially for clinical visits).
Submit Application via e-Services
Log in to the SLMC e-Services portal and select "Overseas Professional Registration" or "Temporary Clinical Authorisation" as appropriate. Complete the form and upload all supporting documents.
Pay the Registration Fee
Pay the applicable fee online. Fees vary by activity type and duration. CME attendance confirmation is free. Temporary Clinical Authorisation carries a fee based on duration (up to 3 months).
Receive Authorisation
The SLMC will review your application and issue the relevant document: registration confirmation, Temporary Clinical Authorisation letter, or programme enrolment certificate. Standard processing is 5–7 working days.
Collect Certificate of Participation
After completing your activity, the organising institution or the SLMC (depending on activity type) will issue a Certificate of Participation or Completion. This can be used for CPD recognition with your home regulatory body.

Apply Well in Advance
Applications for Temporary Clinical Authorisation should be submitted at least 21 days before your intended start date. Last-minute applications cannot be guaranteed.

All Documents Must Be in English
Documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Certified translations from a recognised translation service are acceptable. The SLMC reserves the right to request additional documentation where needed to verify an application.
