Clinical Observership and Training
Overview
Temporary Registration (Category C) is available for overseas healthcare professionals who wish to undertake postgraduate education, supervised clinical training, or clinical attachments at approved healthcare institutions in Sri Lanka. Registration is granted under Section 67A of the Medical Ordinance for a specified institution and period to facilitate approved education and training activities.
Eligibility
You may apply for Temporary Registration (Category C) if you:
- Are not a Sri Lankan citizen.
- Are a medical practitioner, dental practitioner, specialist, or nurse.
- Hold a recognised professional qualification and a valid registration with the relevant regulatory authority in your country of residence.
- Intend to undertake postgraduate education, supervised clinical training, or a clinical attachment in Sri Lanka.
- Have been accepted by an approved Sri Lankan institution for the proposed training.
- Have a designated Sri Lankan specialist who will supervise your clinical activities.
- Obtain sponsorship and recommendation from a Medical or Dental Faculty or the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM).
- Meet the requirements prescribed by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
Application Process
The steps below outline how Temporary Registration (Category C) is applied for, assessed, and renewed.
Obtain Sponsorship
Obtain sponsorship from an approved Sri Lankan institution, such as:
- A Medical or Dental Faculty
- The Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM)
The sponsoring institution should confirm acceptance into the proposed education or training programme.
Submit the Application
Complete the prescribed application form and submit it together with all required supporting documents through the sponsoring institution.
Recommendation
The application must be recommended by one of the following:
- Dean of a Medical or Dental Faculty
- Director, Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM)
The recommendation confirms the applicant's acceptance into the approved postgraduate education or supervised clinical training programme.
SLMC Assessment
The Sri Lanka Medical Council reviews the application and considers it through the appropriate Council committee before making a decision.
Decision
The applicant and sponsoring institution are informed of the Council's decision. Where approved, Temporary Registration is granted for the specified institution and approved training programme for a period not exceeding 12 months.
Renewal (If Required)
Where additional training is required, an application for renewal should be submitted through the original sponsoring institution at least four weeks before the expiry of the current registration. Renewal is subject to approval by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
Documents Required
Both the applicant and the sponsoring institution must submit supporting documents with the application.
Applicants
Applicants should submit the following documents
- Certificate of the primary medical, dental, or nursing qualification.
- Current registration certificate issued by the relevant Medical, Dental, or Nursing Council.
- Certificate of Good Standing issued within the previous six months.
- Postgraduate qualification certificates (where applicable).
- Letter from the current employer.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- Copy of the identification pages of the current passport.
- Letter of agreement from the Sri Lankan specialist providing clinical supervision.
- Proof of payment of the prescribed registration fee (Rs. 38,500).
Sponsoring Institution
The sponsoring institution must provide
- A completed sponsorship recommendation.
- Details of the approved postgraduate education or supervised clinical training programme.
- Details of the supervising Sri Lankan specialist.
- Duration of the proposed training.
- Confirmation that the applicant has been accepted into the programme.
Important Information
- Temporary Registration is restricted to the approved institution and the authorised education or training programme.
- Registration is granted for a maximum period of 12 months.
- Registration does not permit independent or remunerated clinical practice outside the approved training programme.
- Renewal is not automatic and requires a fresh application through the sponsoring institution.
