Is Medicine Right for Me?

A medical career is deeply rewarding, but it is also one of the most demanding paths you can choose. Before committing to years of study and training, take an honest look at whether this profession aligns with your personality, values, and life goals.

Qualities of a Good Doctor

  • Genuine empathy — the ability to understand and share the concerns of patients
  • Strong foundation in the biological sciences: biology, chemistry, and physics
  • Intellectual curiosity and commitment to life-long learning
  • Resilience and the ability to cope with emotionally challenging situations
  • Sound decision-making under pressure, sometimes with incomplete information
  • Clear communication skills — both written and spoken, in English and Sinhala/Tamil
  • Integrity and strong ethical principles in all professional conduct
  • Physical and mental stamina for long working hours and on-call duties

Honest advice: Many students choose medicine for prestige or parental expectation rather than genuine passion for patient care. Be honest with yourself — five or more years of demanding study followed by a lifetime of clinical responsibility is rewarding only if you truly want to serve patients.

Challenges to Prepare For

  • Highly competitive entry — only a small percentage of A/L candidates gain medical faculty admission
  • A minimum of 5–6 years of undergraduate study, followed by 1 year of internship
  • Regular night calls, weekend duties, and unpredictable working hours even as a student
  • Emotional weight of dealing with serious illness, death, and grief
  • Continuous study throughout your career — medicine never stands still
  • Financial investment — fees, books, and equipment add up over years of training

Medical Specialties in Sri Lanka

After full registration you can pursue a postgraduate specialty. Common options include:

  • Internal Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Paediatrics
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Anaesthesiology
  • Psychiatry
  • Radiology
  • Family Medicine
  • Pathology

Entry Requirements

Gaining entry to a faculty of medicine in Sri Lanka is highly competitive. You must sit the Advanced Level (A/L) examination in the correct subjects and achieve results that meet or exceed the cutoff mark for the year you apply.

A/L Subject Requirements

Biology

Compulsory for all medical faculty applicants. Strong pass essential.

Chemistry

Compulsory. A thorough understanding of organic chemistry is required.

Physics

Required by most faculties. Some accept combined maths as an alternative — check individual faculty requirements.

Z-Score: Admission is based on the Z-Score calculated from your A/L results relative to all students who sat the same subjects that year. The cutoff Z-Score for medicine is among the highest of all degree programmes.

Other Important Entry Factors

  • District Quota

University admissions include a district merit quota ensuring representation from all districts. The cutoff Z-Score may vary by district.

  • Medium of Instruction

Faculties offer courses in English. Some faculties offer initial years in Sinhala or Tamil — confirm with the faculty before applying.

  • Private Medical Colleges

Some private institutions in Sri Lanka offer medical degrees. Ensure any private institution you apply to has SLMC recognition before enrolling.

  • Repeating A/Ls

You may sit A/Ls multiple times. Many students who eventually enter medicine did so on their second attempt. Do not be discouraged by a first attempt.

The Career Journey Ahead

From your first A/L paper to independent practice can take 7–8 years. Here is what that journey looks like in Sri Lanka, and where SLMC fits into your path.

1

Advanced Level (A/L) Examination

Sit Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the highest standard. Aim for the best Z-Score possible to maximise your chances of admission to your preferred faculty.

2

Enter a Recognised Medical Faculty

Gain admission to an SLMC-recognised faculty. Confirm recognition before enrolling if considering a private or overseas institution.

3

MBBS / BDS Undergraduate Degree (5–6 yrs)

Complete your degree including clinical clerkships in teaching hospitals. Build clinical skills and study for final professional examinations.

4

Provisional SLMC Registration

Apply to SLMC immediately after graduation. Provisional registration allows you to work as a house officer (intern) under supervision.

5

Compulsory Internship (1 year)

Complete rotations in medicine, surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, and paediatrics in SLMC-approved hospitals under consultant supervision.

6

Full SLMC Registration

On successful completion of internship, apply for full registration. You can now practise independently and pursue any specialty training.
