What are Allied Health Professionals?
Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) are a diverse group of health practitioners who work alongside doctors and nurses to deliver patient care, rehabilitation, diagnostics, and support services. The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating certain categories of AHPs under the Medical Ordinance No. 26 of 1927.
If you are studying an allied health discipline or have recently graduated, you may be required to register with the SLMC before practising in Sri Lanka. Registration ensures that only qualified, fit-to-practise individuals are authorised to work in regulated AHP roles.

Only graduates of SLMC-recognised institutions are eligible for registration.

Qualification Requirements
Recognised Institution Required
You must have graduated from an institution recognised by the SLMC. Graduation from a non-recognised institution does not qualify you for registration.
Sri Lankan Citizenship
Applicants must be Sri Lankan citizens or hold the relevant visa/permit for foreign nationals.
Relevant Degree / Diploma
A degree or diploma in the relevant allied health discipline from an SLMC-recognised institution.
Good Character
Applicants must be of good character with no criminal convictions relevant to fitness to practise.
Recognised Institution
Qualification must be from a local or overseas institution listed on the SLMC register of recognised institutions.
Check Before You Enrol
If you are a prospective student, verify that your intended institution and programme are SLMC-recognised before enrolling. Graduating from a non-recognised programme will prevent SLMC registration.
Registration Process
Confirm your category is regulated
Check the full list of regulated AHP categories on the SLMC website or contact the Registrar's Office to confirm that your discipline requires SLMC registration.
Verify your institution is recognised
Ensure your degree-awarding institution appears on the SLMC list of recognised institutions. If you studied overseas, your institution must appear on the approved foreign institutions list.
Obtain certified copies of documents
Prepare certified copies of your degree certificate, academic transcripts, National Identity Card, and any other required supporting documents. Overseas documents may require authentication.
Submit your application online
Visit www.slmc.gov.lk → Practitioners → Allied Health Professionals. Select your AHP category, create an e-Services account, and complete the online application form with supporting documents (PDF).
Pay the registration fee
Pay the applicable registration fee at the Bank of Ceylon, Maradana branch (Account: 0000371208 — Sri Lanka Medical Council). Include your NIC number as the payment reference.
Attend the interview / submit documents
Some categories require an in-person interview at the SLMC office. Bring all originals on the scheduled date. Applications by post are generally not accepted.
Receive your registration certificate
Once approved, you will receive your SLMC registration certificate. You are now authorised to practise in your regulated AHP category in Sri Lanka.

National Identity Card
Original NIC (and a certified copy).
Degree / Diploma Certificate
Original certificate issued by the recognised institution.
Academic Transcripts
Official transcripts showing subjects studied and results.
Payment Receipt
Original bank payment slip for the applicable registration fee.
Passport-size Photograph
Recent colour photograph (passport size).
Certified Translations
(Overseas graduates) Certified English translations of foreign-language documents.
Authentication / Apostille
(Overseas graduates) Documents may need apostille or authentication via the relevant embassy.
