Overview
The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) is a statutory body established under the Medical Ordinance No. 26 of 1927 (Chapter 105). It functions as the apex regulatory authority for medical and dental practitioners in Sri Lanka, operating through a defined governance structure that ensures accountability, transparency, and professional integrity.
The Council's organizational structure comprises three inter-related pillars: the statutory Council which forms the governing body, the Secretariat which handles day-to-day administration, and Standing Committees which provide expert oversight in specialized areas.

The Council
The Council is the supreme governing body of SLMC, exercising all statutory powers vested under the Medical Ordinance. It sets policy, oversees professional standards, and makes decisions on matters of registration, discipline, and education.

Secretariat & Divisions
The Secretariat is the administrative arm of SLMC, led by the Registrar. It is responsible for implementing Council decisions, managing practitioner registrations, maintaining official registers, and providing professional and financial administration services.
Registration Division
Manages initial registration, renewal, duplicate certificates, and verification of medical and dental practitioners.
Finance & Accounts
Oversees all financial transactions, budgeting, fee collection, and annual auditing of SLMC accounts.
Legal Affairs Division
Handles legal proceedings, disciplinary tribunal support, statutory notifications, and legislative compliance.
CPD / CME Division
Coordinates Continuing Professional Development programmes and accredits CME activities for registered practitioners.
Information Technology
Maintains the online practitioner register, digital services, cybersecurity, and the SLMC web portal infrastructure.
Public Relations
Manages stakeholder communication, public awareness campaigns, media relations, and official announcements.
Committees
The Council operates through standing committees that provide expert oversight, formulate recommendations, and ensure rigorous review of specific regulatory domains.
Ethics & Professional Conduct Committee
Reviews complaints relating to professional misconduct and unethical behaviour. Formulates guidelines on ethical practice and advises the Council on disciplinary matters.
